About the Department

The Groman Lab (www.gromanlab.com) is part of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. We are interested in understanding why some individuals are more susceptible to developing addiction and other diseases compared to others. Current projects include understanding how neural activity in specific circuits is related to behavior across key developmental periods, the molecular mechanisms that regulate genetic and environmental behavioral mechanisms of addiction risk, and investigating the computational mechanisms of select decision-making functions in normal and abnormal states. Our work integrates complex behavioral assessments with state-of-the-art neuroscience techniques in rats to develop links between biology and behavior.

Job Summary

We are seeking to hire three motivated Research Technicians who will be responsible for conducting behavioral assessments in rats at different developmental periods, performing stereotaxic and intrajugular surgeries, collecting and analyzing brain tissue samples using techniques such as immunohistochemistry and proteomics, analyzing data and presenting this data to other team members at research and lab meetings. The position will also support general lab maintenance (e.g., recording data, maintaining laboratory equipment, etc). Applicants should have a strong interest in behavior, cognition, and learning.

Responsibilities

• Following protocols, designs, and conducts basic experiments in rodents.

• Conducting daily behavioral assessments in rats using operant equipment.

• Assist with and perform surgeries in rats to place catheters and/or viruses.

• Collect brain tissue for post-mortem analyses including immunohistochemistry, rtPCR, and proteomics.

• Maintains detailed records of results, including collecting, extracting, and entering data.

• Complete daily care, feeding, and welfare checks of rats.

• Maintains an active breeding colony for ongoing experiments.

• Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.

• Orders and maintains laboratory supplies.

• Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.

• Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

• Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
