About the Department

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology provides care for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients with cancer and other hematologic diseases, requiring the specialty knowledge and skills of Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation. In addition to patient care, clinical and translational research, including laboratory-based wet lab and dry lab studies, are conducted by faculty members in the section.

This at-will position is wholly funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Job Summary

Research in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Beyer, MD Ph.D., is focused on investigating the process of intercellular communication, specifically the direct exchange of ions and small molecules between cells through channels formed of proteins called connexins. Their studies of this process may lead to new pharmacologic or molecular approaches to cancer therapy by manipulating exchange of drugs and drug metabolites between cells and the growth and viability of blood vessels. These studies also have major implications for other clinical areas including cardiac arrhythmias and cataracts. This position performs critical duties to support the research activities in my laboratory. It provides critical support to our projects involved in studying the pathogenesis of cataracts due to the expression of human connexin mutants (using mouse models and tissue culture) and to studying the roles of connexins in the pathogenesis of cancer. This position requires a person to be flexible and detail oriented and must perform the necessary functions to fulfill research obligations while staying within developed laboratory protocols and regulatory compliance.

Prepares institutional animal care protocols and assists with the preparation of presentations and manuscripts reporting research results.

Responsibilities

• Perform experiments that may involve studies in transgenic and knock-out mice.

• Daily observation of animals to assess their health, welfare, and any possible impact of research manipulation.

• Other lab duties may include cell culture and molecular biology assays.

• Ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

• Creates first drafts for scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants.

• Trains and mentor laboratory personnel.

• Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.

• Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze, and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Ph.D. in Cell Biology.

Experience:

• Experience performing experiments involving tissue culture of mammalian cells and genetically manipulated mouse models.

• Experience studying cataracts and lens cells.

• Experience studying the cell biology of gap junctions.

Preferred Competencies

• Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and data analysis software (including NIH ImageJ for analysis of micrographs).

• Analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Attention to detail and organizational skills.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Peer-reviewed scientific publications in the cell biology and/or ophthalmology literature.
