About the Department

Genomics Facility provides access to advanced genomics technologies to University of Chicago researchers. These technologies include Single-Cell Genomics, Spatial Transcriptomics, Next-Generation Sequencing, Micro-arrays, Sanger Sequencing as well as general nucleic acid sample QC and processing. The Facility is well-supported by the Dean’s office and fulfills an essential role in the continued academic success of the University of Chicago.


Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

This position is intended as expert technical support of the Applied BioSystems-based Sanger data production pipeline. This position will be involved in Sanger sequencing services provided by the University of Chicago Genomics Facility. Additionally, this position will need to be able to perform other Core related services as needed.

Responsibilities

80% Sanger Sequencing Data Production Pipeline (bench):

  • Proficient in Sanger sequencing sample intake, sample processing and data output procedure.

  • Operates ABI and related equipment.

  • Work closely with other facility staff to ensure timely delivery of samples to PIs.

(20%) Other Facility related functions as needed:

  • Rigorous in keeping records related to the Sanger data production pipeline.

  • Update clients on project progress as needed.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genomics.


Experience:

  • Preferred is a minimum of 3-6 month prior experience in a Core or Research lab setting.

Preferred Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate internally with co-workers and externally with Facility clients.

  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Detail oriented with strong sense of work ownership.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
