About the Department

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 140 clinical providers, providing care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and seven off site locations. We have more than 68,000 outpatient visits, 28,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,300 surgeries per year. Teaching, research, and the highest quality clinical care are top priorities for the Department. The residency and fellowship programs are highly ranked and have a history of training leaders in healthcare. The Department also has a significant research enterprise, engaging in population health studies, as well as research conducted in wet laboratories on tumor biology, fibroid research, and hypertensive diseases in pregnancy. Additionally, the Section of Reproductive Medicine and Fertility aside from their groundbreaking clinical work is active in performing research to investigate causes of infertility, advance and evaluate the efficacy of treatments and therapies, and improve the quality-of-care patients receive. The department was ranked #16 on the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report.

Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research. This role provides care to both our inpatient and outpatient population. This role performs procedures in the ambulatory setting for our Reproductive and Fertility population.

Perform duties as an APP, who is a skilled health care provider, qualified to evaluate, diagnosis, and treat patients under the scope of supervising and/or alternating supervising physicians. Services provided in the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility patients include well woman care, reproductive and fertility options, post-operative care, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Services are provided with available consultation from attending physicians and in collaboration with medical trainees. The supervising physician or the alternate physician maintains final responsibility for the care of the patient and the performance of the APP.

Responsibilities

• Independently sees patients in Hyde Park and/or offsite clinics, administers, orders, and interprets diagnostic tests, such as ultrasounds, scans, and laboratory tests.

• Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition.

• Instructs and counsels patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

• Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests.

• Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations diagnoses and makes decisions about the management and treatment of patients.

• Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination.

• Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, Saline infusion sonograms and endometrial biopsies.

• Prescribes therapy or medication.

• Educates patient on health habits, self-examinations, behavior management, need for follow-up assessments/treatments, at home medical care, medication and other issues related to medical or health problems.

• Visits and observes patients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician.

• May order medical and laboratory supplies and equipment.

• Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.

• Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

• Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

• Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• College or university degree from an accredited school/college and completion of an accredited APP program.

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

• National certification as a Nurse Practitioner through AANP or ANCC.

Experience:

• Two years’ experience preferred in OB/GYN, surgical specialty, or primary care.
